What is sed?

What have I learned about sed?

Well, it's a stream editor, meaning it edits text that's fed through it.

When using sed to edit, you use regex filters and commands to make changes to the text.

I learned that sed applies it's entire program (filters and commands) to each line. So, it's important to be careful how you write these. If applied in the wrong order, you may over-edit the line you are editing.

I've learned that sed sends its output to the operating system's standard output stream. This means that you need to redirect this output to a file if you want to preserve the edits. It's a good idea to send the output to a temporary file first and then overwrite the original once you have confirmed correct edits.

Integrations

I set up an IFTTT.com recipe that creates a post on this blog every time I post a photo to Instagram. It works pretty well.

The photo posted here is actually a link to Instagram, so I guess if anything ever happens to the external link function on Instagram, these blog posts will have broken image links. I suppose if Instagram shuts down, I'll have to download the images and redo the links. I guess that could be time consuming if I have a lot of them. But, I'll worry about that when the time comes.

The only other issue is that the linked photo is a little too big for the normal post format. This means if I bring the site up on a mobile device, the images look all wonky. My current fix is to manually adjust the linked image to the right size. For now it works. Maybe later I will try to find a way to automate the fix. Or perhaps there is a way to fix the IFTTT recipe.

It's Been Awhile

It's been a very long time since I posted anything other than a picture to this blog. I guess more entries are long overdue.

So why now? The answer is that I have been pondering an idea. The idea is to write some kind of mechanism that will grab the text from new entries to this blog and format them and apply them to my gopher phlog.

I've been looking into the WordPress API to do this, but I don't really have any current text entries. To fix this, I plan to make some over the next few days.

A Saturday at Home

Most Saturdays, I go visit my friend Rob where we watch movies or sports or just sit around and gab. This week Rob was unavailable, so I'm at home tonight.

I decided to watch the X-Files. From what I understand, this is a six-episode season of new content. So far, I like it.

I've had some more time to evaluate my new phone. I really like it. It's a bit bigger than I would normally like, but just a bit. It's not so big that I feel as though I'm trying to use a tablet as a phone. More on this subject later.

A New Phone and a New Carrier.

So I got a new phone today an LG G4. It's pretty sweet. At the same time I switched my mobile carrier to T-Mobile. I admit to some reservation over the decision. T-Mobile, historically, has a reputation of poor coverage. I'm happy to say that my experience so far has been pretty positive. At my house and at my parents' house, the signal strength is excellent. I look forward to evaluating this new combo.

I have been in a training class for the last few days. It was a basic overview of the Axway MailGate appliance. I passed the exam this afternoon, so I got an Axway certification. Not sure if it will help me, but hey... it's something.

Video calling, the followup.

So my nephew never got back to me. Yet, I remain committed. I'll keep after people till someone video calls with me.

Today, I was in a class to learn Axway's MailGate. Tomorrow I will do the same.

Video calling...

I decided to try out video calling on my phone. Google Hangouts seemed like it would be a good app to try. My biggest problem? I don't know anyone to call.

My nephew Adam says he will give it a try with me. So, I'll wait and see what happens. Technology is wild brother, just far out wild.

It's Sunday

That's just a reminder to myself. Tomorrow is a holiday so I need to remind myself it's Sunday. This way I can enjoy myself more tomorrow by knowing that if not for the holiday, I would be at work.

I ordered a new phone today and plan to switch carriers.

I added a projects page to the site.

We met a lady today who is looking to catch feral cats in our area to help with the problem in Ranson.

Another post...

Well, it's been a few days, but I'm back with another post. My therapist once gave me some advice regarding going to the gym. She told me sometimes it was good to go, even if you knew you weren't going to do a great workout. By going regularly, you can cement the habit of going so that in the future it becomes a rote process. In this way yopu have less of a "feeling" about it. So, I'll try to remember to post as frequently as I can, to get this blogging habit cemented.

Last night ME and I went to see the movie "Deadpool". It was fun and I can say for certain we were entertained. We laughed... alot.

That is all.

Hello world!

The title stays the same, but the content changes.

Those familiar with WordPress will know that every new installation starts with a sample post. The title of this post is "Hello World!" The post content is something about WordPress, but this is where I have made a change.

If all goes well, I'll update this blog periodically... or not. Only time will tell.
